IB unit: “How the world works“. Growing Green Friends: The Oliziukas Adventure
2025 April 5th Pre-school

Say hello to Oliziukas—a delightful little creation with a head made from a sock or pantyhose, filled with sawdust, cotton, and a sprinkle of seeds that grow into vibrant grassy "hair"! Our preschoolers had a blast at the “Kauno Atžalyno” library, where they crafted their very own green “pet” during an exciting workshop.

Creating an Oliziukas is more than just fun—it’s a workout for fine motor skills! Daily watering teaches kids about seed germination while nurturing a sense of responsibility and patience. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to explore different materials and their unique properties. Using sawdust, wheat grains, a piece of sock, water, and colorful decorations, children brought their Oliziukas to life.

Before getting crafty, the kids dove into the world of plants, learning about their main parts and what they need to sprout and thrive. As they watered and took care of Oliziukas, our preschoolers discovered that even grains planted together grow at their own pace. The sprouting wheat, looking like lush green hair, was perfect for styling into creative hairstyles and sparked joy in every child.

This hands-on adventure not only grew grassy friends but also cultivated curiosity, wonder, and plenty of smiles!
