IB Unit: "How We Express Ourselves". Unleashing Creativity: Exploring Self-Expression Across Various Contexts.

IB Unit:
2025 February 11th Grade 2

Since December, our 2nd graders have been engaged in the transdisciplinary theme -"How We Express Ourselves." We focus on understanding the concept of creativity and expressing our creativity in different ways.

At the beginning of this unit, we delved into the concept of creativity, encouraging students to reflect on its meaning and significance. Each child shared their personal understanding of creativity and creative expression through a written description. These reflections were then showcased in the classroom, fostering an open environment for discussion and self-expression. Additionally, we explored the creative mediums most familiar to the children, identifying the ways in which they naturally convey their thoughts—whether through storytelling, illustration, or literary forms such as poetry and fairy tales.

As the unit progressed, pupils discovered that creativity extends beyond the arts and can also be found in mathematics. This understanding encouraged them to approach problem-solving with originality, apply critical thinking strategies, and explore innovative solutions. The school’s Christmas play served as a valuable platform for pupils to apply their knowledge while expressing their creative ideas through costume design, acting, dancing, and singing. Similarly, during Lithuanian language lessons, they “channeled” their creativity into writing heartfelt letters and Christmas greetings for elderly individuals supported by the Red Cross, demonstrating their ability to express themselves in meaningful and thoughtful ways.

In mathematics lessons, pupils reinforced their understanding of geometric shapes and demonstrated their creativity by designing and drawing symmetrical objects. This activity allowed them to apply their knowledge in a creative and hands-on way. During art and technology lessons, they further explored their artistic skills by participating in the national competition "Christmas Tale 2024," illustrating festive greetings, and crafting figures for the national "Father Christmas" competition.

Through the practical application of creativity across different contexts, pupils not only deepened their understanding of the concept but also discovered diverse ways to express themselves. Engaging in collaborative activities further strengthened their ability to generate and share ideas, while developing creative skills that will benefit them both in their academic journey and in real-world situations beyond the classroom.
