IB unit “Where we are in place and time”. The significance of heritage from the past.
2022 November 9th Grade 3

While inquiring into this topic, the third graders were interested in the ways information about the past
was collected and preserved, and why the legacy of the past is important today. They shared stories
about the use of artifacts they brought, what purpose those objects served, what has replaced them now,
and how they are significant to their families.
They also conducted interviews with their grandparents, grandmothers, mothers, and fathers about their
Christmas celebrations in childhood. Students discovered interesting facts about how Christmas trees
were decorated in the past. Summing up the information, children realized that the most important
value is the time spent together with family.
Students participated in educational activities such as "Medieval Entertainment and Games" and "The
19th-century School in Mažoji Lietuva." They researched information about medieval games in
Lithuania and drew conclusions that the game "Kvirkatas," similar to checkers, was indeed very
popular.
During the educational activity on "The 19th-century School in Mažoji Lietuva," they learned about the
history of first schools, the subjects taught, learning tools of that time, student behavior rules, and
punishments for less advanced students. They found out what ancient Gothic alphabet letters looked
like and even tried writing them down. They concluded that learning tools nowadays are better,
learning is more interesting, and there are more sources of information to choose from.
Using collage technique, students created posters on current and past fashion, depicting how children
dressed in the past and how they dress now. They presented their work to their classmates and found
out that modern children's clothes are more colorful, comfortable, and have a wide variety in stores.
